Construction of Parking Lot under I-93

Location: Boston, MA
MassDOT-Highway Division

Project Description: The project consisted of construction of a 5 acre parking lot under interstate 93 from Herald to Randolph Streets and adjoining site development including hardscape, recreational and elevated timber walkway construction. The project included demolition of existing concrete site walls, landforms and MassDOT stored concrete wall panels. The earthwork required excavation and testing of 14,000 CY of existing soil and transporting & disposing of 17,700 tons of asbestos contained material (ACM). All of the ACM work was conducted under Level C worker controls, perimeter controls and site testing. Three major intersections required complete traffic signal reconstruction. The parking lot construction included bituminous paving, drainage pipes & structures, curbing, concrete walkways & wheel chair ramps, ornamental stone surface treatments, chain link fencing, custom metal fencing, ornamental lighting, guard rail, signage, landscaping, granite bollards, electrical conduit & wiring, street lighting, electrical transformers and load centers, warning signage, pavement markings and anti-graffiti coating & painting. The site improvements included a sports court surface, trash receptacles, recreational equipment, fabricated steel lighting structures, custom signage, custom graphics and an elevated timber walkway.
