Project Description: Work consists of reconstructing 3 undergrade railroad bridges over local roadways on the New Bedford Main Line, including demolition and reconstruction of new abutments with new steel superstructure. The railroad bridge replacements includes removal and replacement of 4,000 LF of track as well as 40,000 CY of excavation for structures and structural backfill, track improvements over the bridges, retaining wall reconstruction and repair, in addition to reconstruction of adjacent roadways and intersections, including traffic signals, relocation of sewer, water and utilities, and modification to the existing drainage system. A Value Engineering Change Proposal that substituted 3,000LF of precast retaining wall in lieu of cast in place retaining walls was proposed by A.A. Will and accepted by the MBTA.
Each of the three fracture critical bridges consisted of multiple girders spanning an average of 55 feet and supported on each end by cast in place concrete abutments. The superstructure is fully decked with plates to carry the trackbed ballast stone.
